West Cumbrian pigeon feeders’ in court appeal

Two High Harrington women are appealing against their conviction for breaching an abatement order to stop leaving food out for birds.
Mildred Monica McIntosh, 77, and Janet Lorraine McIntosh, 48, of Broadacres, were found guilty at a two-day trial at West Cumbria Magistrates Court in December.
They were fined £500 each, ordered to pay £1,182 costs and a £15 surcharge and told by magistrates they faced a £50 fine for every day they continued.
The appeal will be heard at Carlisle Crown Court on July 3.
The mother and daughter were taken to court by Allerdale council after neighbours said their lives were being made a misery by 300 feral pigeons which congregated on roof tops around Broadacres and left droppings.
They blamed the McIntoshes for encouraging the pigeons by feeding them.
Both mother and daughter told the court they had not fed pigeons since the order was served, but admitted putting small feed out for other birds.
Ten residents from Broadacres are expected to give evidence at the appeal.

Saturday, June 20th, 1885Over 2,000 people attended the Temperance Gala held at Greencroft Park, Haltwhistle.
Led by the Bardon Mill Brass Band, 12 temperance societies paraded through the town, prior to an open air meeting in the park.
During the event the Rev. J.M. Russel condemned the House of Commons for rejecting a proposal to increase taxes on spirits and beer.
