THERE have been references to a settlement at Slaley since the time of the Norman Conquest. Set on a ridge six miles south of Hexham the present village of Slaley provides an excellent starting point for visitors to this part of rural Northumberland.

There are many walks to be had in the surrounding area including Slaley Forest and Juliet’s Wood while the nature reserve at Ladycross Quarry provides ample opportunity for studying the local flora and fauna.
For those who have worked up an appetite the Travellers Rest on the Hexham Road provides good food. The Rose and Crown in Slaley village is expected to due to reopen under new management. Accommodation can be had in the caravan/camping parks, farmhouse B&Bs or at Slaley Hall Hotel. A game of golf on a championship course may be enjoyed at the latter.
Slaley is a thriving community. Highlights of the social calendar are the annual Slaley Show held in August at Townhead Field and the Leek and Flower Show in October. The village hall hosts regular activities throughout the year ranging from keep fit classes to a film club to carpet bowls.
