OVINGHAM is situated on the River Tyne immediately north of Prudhoe.
It’s the perfect place to spend some time if you are visiting Tynedale.
The famous engraver Thomas Bewick (1758-1828) was baptised and buried in the parish church – St Mary the Virgin. The church boasts a Saxon tower and is floodlit at night when it looks spectacular.
From here, there are many pleasant walks. You could explore Whittle Dene, wander along the riverside via the village green or enjoy a longer walk along the Tyne Countryside Park.
Before you explore further though, refresh yourself with either a meal at the White Swan Inn or lighter refreshments at the Bridge End Inn which is a free house and also offers bed-and-breakfast accommodation. Additionally, the Londis shop will cater for most of your requirements.
Visit Ovingham in June you‘ll enjoy the annual and historic Goose Fair. The fair dates back hundreds of years when geese were walked from Carlisle to market in Newcastle. The geese and their handlers almost certainly enjoyed their rest in Ovingham.
Ovingham maintains a real sense of community which you will enjoy when you pay the place a visit.
