EVEN for someone with relatively little knowledge of folk music, it’s clear that Tyde’s debut album is an example of talented young musicians playing their music at a professional level.

Tyde is a three-piece from the North-East that is clearly influenced by many local places, people and musicians; all of which come together to help shape this album, the launch of which was hosted by the Queen’s Hall in Hexham to incredible success and the contents played live in an emotional and flawless performance.

The album opens with Chairdance, a song inspired by guitarist and vocalist Seth Tinsley’s experience with interpretive dance.

A slow and almost sultry guitar opens the track and impresses from the offset. It is soon joined by violin and moves into a much faster and certainly more folk-inspired melodies.

Exciting and fresh, the album continues to deliver a combination of original and traditional folk tunes in quick succession. The tracks unblemished by pretension.

The look of death stands out as an unmistakable show of the group’s togetherness, combining in musical terms inside jokes and melodies that clearly mean a lot to them.

In contrast, The Falls seems more of a lament and shows the clear maturity of the players.

The mellow ending to the album comes in Beth and Bert, a combination of tunes taught to the musicians and tracks written by Heather Gessey and Andrew Waite.

This track provides closure for the album but doesn’t leave the listener with the feeling that it is all over for Tyde – for it is clear that there is still a lot more to come from these young musicians.
