Live music warms up for Redefest

AN ECLECTIC range of live music will ring around Rochester tomorrow with the return of the popular Redefest music festival.
More than 12 hours of live music spanning all sorts of genres will go ahead whatever the weather at the village’s former Brigantium Roman Fort.
Headlining the festival will be an eight-piece ska band The Ska-Toons, while lively folk-rock band Rhythm Thieves are sure to be a hit too.
There will be an array of quirkily named bands playing elsewhere on the two stages, including Alex & the Wanderband, We Steal Flyers, The Kentucky Cow Flytippers, Honey Fungus and Jinski.
Providing a diverse line-up of musical talent is what makes the event so exciting for visitors, said Redefest chairman Jim Procter.
“There is a real mixture of music on the day with everything from folk to ska at the end, with over half of the acts local,” he said.
“We don’t want to be a typecast festival like just a folk festival or just a rock festival, and we would have classical music if we could get it and it fitted in with the festival.
“The people on our committee are very varied in our tastes and, if we hear something we like, we try to get them for the event whatever the genre.
“There is a fair bit of excitement about Redefest as always, and we are very much looking forward to it.”
In addition to the music, there are a number of workshops planned for the day and there will be plenty of activities to keep families entertained.
The festival will run from midday until 11pm.

AT a public meeting in Wylam Institute it was decided to split the remaining money in the village's peace celebration fund between the village schools and a planned war memorial to the Fallen.
A brass plaque bearing the names of 19 former students who died in the Great War was to be erected in the Wylam Council Schools at a cost of £20 and £30 was to be donated to the war memorial fund.
