Boys play at German banquet

TWO wrinkly rockers from Tynedale took the limelight at a massive event in Germany last weekend.
The Proper Boys – Paul Elliott from Corbridge and Mike Bersin from Keenley, Allendale – were booked by one of the largest distributors of Harley-Davidson motor cycles in the world to be the entertainment at their annual awards banquet.
The Overseas Military Sales Corporation awards banquet took place in Frankfurt on Saturday.
The Proper Boys have a proud pedigree, with Paul a former sideman with Sting, and Mike a guitarist with Freddie Mercury.
They got together when they realised there was a big place in the North-East music scene for a band that faithfully recreated the classic rock music of the 60s and 70s.
Paul said: “We try to bring stadium rock to any venue and we love a party, so we really enjoyed playing some iconic music at such a prestigious event.”
Mike added: “We always say we’re ‘music to drink beer by’ and publicans certainly seem to like us as their bar-takings tend to increase when we’re the entertainment.
“And we made sure our Born to be wild was perfect – it’s not company you’d want to get it wrong in!”

A workman was buried alive while digging a drain in the Prudhoe Urban Council's housing estate at Oaklands.
Workmates rushed to the aid of 50-year-old Richard Barclay, of Stocksfield, when the wall of the trench he was digging collapsed.
They managed to dig his head and shoulders free before finally pulling him from the earth. He was found to be suffering from shock and bruising.
