Squash master class

Hexham Squash Club staged another successful event for its junior members by inviting Dave Barnett, the region’s top player, to run a master class coaching session during half term.

With nearly 40 juniors signed up, the event had to be extended as the youngsters eagerly took advantage of Dave’s expert tuition.

Small group sessions were followed by the chance to practise their drives, boasts and drop shots with the older juniors.

After a welcome sausage and chips tea, the afternoon concluded with a closely contested quiz which was won by Greta Salveson’s ‘Team G’.

Thanks were extended to Simon and Gavin of Tony Binks’s team for the refreshments and to squash club members who helped .

At the Newcastle Junior Open Competition in February Simon Graham finished in the fifth to eighth placings in the strong U15 event while Harry Steward was placed 17th and won the plate.

Harriet Speed was a creditable runner-up in the girls’ U15 group and Tim Blake competed well in the Mixed U11 event.

At the Norton Junior Open the following weekend Simon played with consistent strength to finish third in his age group.
