The thaw scuppers Tyne event

THE rapid weekend thaw forced the postponement of Hexham Canoe Club’s national ranking Wavehopper event at the weekend.
While water levels of the River Tyne were rock bottom on Saturday, there were dangerously high on the day of the race leaving organisers with little option but to rearrange.
With the Bobby Timperley Trophy for the best performing junior from the North-East incorporated in the event, the current was too fast for the younger participants.
There was disappointment for race organiser Chloe Glendenning who had competitors travel from Barrow-in-Furness, in Cumbria, Teesside and Blyth.
But all is not lost as the race between Warden and Tyne Green, in Hexham, has been rearranged for Saturday, February 16.
