Pigeon race reports

Tynedale Homing Society held a race on Sunday from Folkestone, when six members sent 35 birds.

It was a good race for Newbiggin’s Peter Jackson as his birds took the first three positions.

Tyne Valley members sent 74 birds a distance of 300 miles where the birds had to work hard with a north-west wind. Hindmarsh and Telfer took first, P. Telfer second and S. Ridgeway third.

Over 2,000 people attended the Temperance Gala held at Greencroft Park, Haltwhistle.

Led by the Bardon Mill Brass Band, 12 temperance societies paraded through the town, prior to an open air meeting in the park.

During the event the Rev. J.M. Russel condemned the House of Commons for rejecting a proposal to increase taxes on spirits and beer.
