HOCKEY: DESPITE a third match in four days, Tynedale Ladies’ Hockey Club claimed a 3-1 victory over Newcastle Medics.

Captained by Sue Crawford, the Tyne girls put in a sterling effort throughout with Carole Weatherley and Sam Tuck leading the attack well to put their opponents under constant pressure.

Unsurprisingly, they opened the score after 15 minutes, Tori Rutherford picking up the ball on the left wing and slipping it past the goalkeeper.

Tynedale’s strong defence saw all of the play kept in the Medics’ half with Tuck provided with the perfect opportunity to score a cracking goal before half time.

The pressure was back on just minutes into the second half, Medics getting a goal back.

Some excellent saves from Pip Gibby and solid defending from Rachael Tapping, Amy Keirl, and Katy Brown kept Tyne’s noses in front, while Ffion Owen took the game to the opponents with some nifty passing.

The result was put beyond any doubt late on, player of the match Gemma Stanhope rounding off the scoring after a long run, a quick pass and then a lovely flick into the net.
