Kielder celebrates home win

LOCAL sailors Viola and Mike Scott emerged triumphant in Kielder Water Sailing Club’s Dam to Dam race.

As part of the club’s open day celebrations, the host pairing crossed the line first in their Osprey ahead of Dave and Geraldine Rosser’s Flying Fifteen.

But the biggest cheer was reserved for Joe Boyden, who finished last of the 30-strong field!

While all the A-class catamarans finished within five minutes of each other, Boyden’s Topper finally completed the 15-mile course almost two hours after the winner.

Meanwhile, Bob Fletcher was the victor in the May Open for A-class catamarans.

Fletcher, of Snettisham Beach and Rutland sailing clubs, won half of the six races held to narrowly edge Phil Neal into second place.

Prestwick’s Alan Henderson and Alastair Barrie topped the charts in the handicap event, run on a different course to the A class.

Their Osprey beat Steve Hunt and Ruth Critchley’s Merlin Rocket by a single point.

More than 40 boats competed at Kielder during the three days, with some sailors making the 400-mile journey from Shoreham, in Kent, to take part.
