THE swimming pool at the Wentworth Leisure Centre was awash with first schoolchildren competing in the annual district wide swimming gala.
Around 100 youngsters from Tynedale schools participated in the popular sporting event, with competitors battling it out to finish ahead of their counterparts.
There was an array of individual competitions, with medals handed out to the winners of the various backstroke, breaststroke, fly, front crawl and relay competitions.
There were also trophies handed out to the school which had accrued most points over the competitions, with Hexham’s Sele picking up the 15m trophy and the town’s St Mary’s winning the 25m silverware.

Prudhoe workers were queuing up at the town's employment exchange to put their names down for jobs at a new £15million wood pulp factory.
Plans for the factory, which would occupy the former ICI site, had been passed by Northumberland County Council, and it was hoped that when it opened it would turn Prudhoe into a boom town.
Many of those registering for jobs had been unemployed since the ICI plant closed down the previous July.
