Helen in the driving seat at Haltwhistle

THE July Medal at Haltwhistle Golf Club was won by Helen Ditchfield (106-37=71).
The Travellers Trophy was played at Lochmaben on a wet and windy day. Dorothea Routledge won with 26pts, followed by Carole Mortimore and Helen Ditchfield with 21pts,
The August Medal was won by Carole Mortimore (98-23=75).
The men’s August Medal was won by Chris.Bowerbank (79-13=66), from Richard Byers (79-13=66) and Trevor Jackson (74-7=67) In Category 2, the winner was Gavin Mitchell (82-17=65) from Steven Batey (88-23=65) and Eric Barker (91-23=68). Best gross was Phil Dalton (73).
Captain’s Day took place on Saturday, at the second attempt. Captain Russell Mitchell welcomed all players back after the first competition was cancelled with 40 golfers still on the course when a storm left it two inches under water.
Honours on the day went to Jason Elliott (40pts). The seniors’ event was won by John Cooke, the ladies’ event by Helen Ditchfield, the juniors’ category one event by M.Armstrong; and category two by J. Pape.
Former junior captain James Mason, having won the July Medal at Allendale Golf Club on a countback, again found himself in that position when the August Medal was played last Sunday.
This time the decision went against him, Jonathan Dodd (77-13=64) edging Mason’s (86-22=64) with another countback necessary before Andrew Gray (82-17=65) took third.
At Matfen Hall Golf Club, the ladies’ Medal 13 and Club Championship second round was won by Pam Henderson (87-15=72). Second was Eleanor Inglis (91-17=74) and third Lucy Newton (80-3=77).

Free two-hour golf lessons for children aged between three and 15 are being held at Matfen Hall as part of the Golf Rocks annual junior golf festival.
The youngsters can be of any ability – including beginners – and families can bring picnics along with them in an event run in conjunction with the PGA North Region on Sunday, August 23.
Equipment is free and the youngsters can wear trainers and jeans. There are also tri-golf lessons available for toddlers under five years old, using plastic clubs and soft golf balls.
All any parent or guardian needs to do in order to book a session is to ring the PGA North Region office between 9am and 5pm on 01204 496137.
At Bellingham Golf Club, the Ladies’ Team Open was held. The results were: 1, Helena Earl, Ann Newbury (Workington), Dee Ruddick 78pts; 2, Christine Robson (Bellingham), Norma Mould (Hexham), Christine Foster (Hexham) 75pts; 3, Val Passara (Hexham), Viv Younger (Hexham), Val Hutchinson (Matfen Hall) 75pts; 4, Pam Jack (Bellingham), Shirley Carruthers (Bellingham), Jill Kennedy (Thornhill) 73pts.
The weather was a very mixed affair at Hexham Golf Club for Monica Aitken’s lady captain’s day. It was enjoyed by everyone, as was the presentation evening, and the excellent buffet, provided by the golf club caterers.
The many prizes presented by Monica, went to the following: Seven hole competition, Elinor Hinds (7pts); Putting competition, Vera Morrell; Nearest the pin, on 2nd and 16th holes, Evlyn Henderson and Val Pesarra; Higher Bronze Division, 1, Brenda Roberts (35pts), 2, Lin Cunliffe (35pts), 3, Judith Walker (32pts). Lower Bronze Division: 1, Angela Gilhespy (38pts), 2, Norma Mould (38 pts), 3, Betty Hindhaugh (36 pts); Silver Division: 1, Viv Younger (37pts), 2, Laura Johnson (36pts), 3, Val Pesarra (34pts); the team prize was won by Sue Turner, Jane Murray and Vicki Stancer, with 99 pts.
There was a small competition. on the previous Saturday for ladies unable to play on the main day. This was won by Sue Crawford, with 36 points.
Hexham’s very popular Senior Men’s Open was played on July 15, in good conditions, apart from a morning downpour.
The winners of the pairs betterball stableford competition were C. Macwhirter and G. Merryweather (44pts) from Alnmouth, closely followed by Hexham’s Brian Paterson and Kevin Walsh (43pts), placed second after countback, with T. Cranmer and B. Crowder (43pts) from Whickham third. Another seven prizes were awarded to pairs with 39pts or more.
Other prizes awarded were: Nearest the pin on 10th hole, Antonio di Giralamo, Hexham; Nearest the pin on 16th hole, C. Grieve, Goswick; Longest drive on 14th hole, G. Merryweather, Alnmouth.
John Gair (69-4=65) was the Division One winner and had the lowest gross in the Monthly Medal Competition played on August 1. Bryan Robson (72-6=66) was second, and Jonathon Richardson (77-10=67) third after countback.
Matthew Armstrong (91-25=66) won Division Two, followed after countback by Kim Steward (80-13=67), who also had the lowest gross. David Oliver (88-21=67) was third.
At Tynedale Golf Club, the medal competition in Dvision One was won by Peter Carson (76-12=64), ahead of Brendan Murphy (78-12=66) and Kevin Mewse (70-4=66).
In Division Two, the winner was David Ballard (88-23=65), followed by Alan Pearson (85-20=65) and David Evans (85-18=67).

A workman was buried alive while digging a drain in the Prudhoe Urban Council's housing estate at Oaklands.
Workmates rushed to the aid of 50-year-old Richard Barclay, of Stocksfield, when the wall of the trench he was digging collapsed.
They managed to dig his head and shoulders free before finally pulling him from the earth. He was found to be suffering from shock and bruising.
