A PONTELAND teenager helped England U16 football team retain the prestigious Victory Shield.

Daniel Pybus (14), a pupil at the town’s high school, appeared off the bench for the final 23 minutes as the Young Lions defeated Scotland 1-0 at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium. With the game televised live on Sky Sports and played in front of 2,000 spectators, the youngster did not freeze on the big stage.

His call-up to the 18-strong squad made the Sunderland AFC academy player one of the youngest to be selected for the U16 team, and is further proof of his potential in the professional game.
