Greens sweep all before them

A diamond jubilee weekend for Hexham Greens U11s (right) had a silver lining as they were crowned champions in a prestigious seven a side football tournament held at Kingston Park, Newcastle.

Teams from across the North East, Cumbria and Scotland played some terrific football with scouts from a number of Premiership sides represented.

Hexham won their group stage with two draws and two wins with goals from Will Roberts (5), Alex Wood (3) & Vinnie Proudlock. They only conceded three goals all day which was evidence of a great overall team performance.

Cramlington faced a resurgent Hexham in the quarter finals and two goals from Will Roberts gave Hexham a comfortable win.

Red House Farm, who traditionally field strong sides, were next up and superb display from Hexham saw them score four times without reply, to earn the Greens a richly deserved place in the final.

Goals from Will Roberts (3) and Alex Wood did the damage.

The final was played against Whitley Bay, against whom they drew 1-1 in the group stage, so a tight final was on the cards.

However an early goal from Will Roberts settled Hexham who went on to play some brilliant football, hanging on to their 1-0 lead at half time.

Whilst Whitley Bay continued to push, pass and press it was Hexham who added two more goals with Will Roberts scoring (again) and a terrific header by Olly James.

The effort and commitment shown by Hexham Greens was something they have been threatening to do for some time in a tournament.

In the end they ran out comfortable winners with a 3-0 victory and at the final whistle there were a lot of very happy players on the pitch, not to mention the parents.

Both coaches Andy and Stephen Turnbull were understandably very proud and delighted with their teams achievement.
