Argyles make it three in a row

Dr Syntax 1,Hexham Argyles 2ARGYLES made it three wins out of three as they continued their best start to a season to date with a victory over a strong Prudhoe team.

The game started with the usual flurry of a Hexham and District Sunday League Second Division encounter, as both teams pushed for the opening goal.

But it was Argyles who got the early breakthrough when good work by James Hooker down the left side played in Ian Rogerson.

He took a touch before putting in a sublime pass for free-scoring left winger Neil McDonald to finish off with a great curler over the Prudhoe keeper.

Prudhoe pressed straight after the restart and showed they were as much up for the match as their Hexham counterparts.

However, the Argyles defence, aided by an in-form Dave Anderson, were quick to clean up anything that got into the penalty area.

And it wasn’t long before Argyles made it 2-0.

Busta Heslop chased a long ball down the right hand side, gave himself half a yard, and then whipped in a cracking cross that found Steve Miller unmarked in the area.

His striker partner headed it back across the helpless Prudhoe keeper into the far corner of the net.

Prudhoe still believed they were in the game and continued to press for a goal before half-time, with the two front men continuing to make life difficult for Argyles’ defence.

And it wasn’t long before they had the ball in the back of the net, only for it to be ruled offside.

The second half was a scrappy affair with both teams finding it hard to put passes together on the deteriorating pitch.

Prudhoe looked the more likely to score, but they failed to capitalise on some good build-up play, as Anderson snapped up any balls put into his penalty area.

However, they had one last attack in them.

Good work by Stobbart caused a corner from which Argyles failed to clear, only for Armstrong to hit a great shot on the turn past the rooted keeper.

It was all too little, too late though, as the full-time whistle blew giving Hexham a hard-fought win.
