T20 is heading West

THE newest and most exciting form of cricket yet devised will make its West Tyne League debut later this month.
A Twenty/20 competition, complete with exotic names, has been launched to fill in blank Saturdays caused by the loss of several teams over the last few years.
Teams like the Newbrough Pelicans, the Allendale Mocos, the Belsay Ba Ba's and the Wylam Foxes will be locking horns , resplendent in new colourful kit.
JustSport West Tyne League secretary Colin Walker said this week: “ We are hoping the shorter, quicker and more exciting game will encourage the return of some who have drifted away from cricket.
“We also hope to attract younger players not already involved in the game.”
Group games will be played in three mini -leagues with the winner of each league and one best runner up making the semi finals.
The semi finals and final will be played all in one day on July 29 at one of the four semi finalists’ grounds.
Fixtures start on Saturday June 30, with two games at each of the three venues – Wark, Haltwhistle and Mitford.
This will be followed by single games on Wednesday July 4 and a further double game weekend on July 7 at Newbrough, Hexham Leazes and Wylam.
All games will be played with full coloured clothing, with black stumps and pink balls.
Mr Walker said: “ The purchase of the equipment has been aided by a grant from Sport England, to whom we are grateful, along with the support we have received from Ian Wardle from the Northumberland Cricket Board, a donation from SCA Prudhoe and Ian Stokoe from our sponsors Justsport.”
The opening fixtures will see Bellingham Spitfires v Humshaugh Centurions and Wark Reivers v Hexham Leazes Riot in the North Group; Allendale Mocos v Stocksfield Spartans and Newbrough Pelicans v Haltwhistle Hurricanes in the central group, and Belsay Ba Bas v South North Bulls and Mitford Boars v Wylam Foxes in the east.
