CRICKET is booming in Corbridge, especially in the junior section, which held its presentation night at the clubhouse on Sunday.
The awards were handed out by coach Dave Smurthwaite and club welfare officer John Maude.
Dave Smurthwaite thanked the many volunteers who gave so much time throughout the season to ensure the smooth running of the junior section and praised the performances of those juniors who had played senior cricket in the 2nd XI during 2009.
He also thanked Gorman Hamilton solicitors for their sponsorship.
He was only half joking when he said: “John and I will have to fight for our places next season.
“There is some tremendous talent growing and being developed in the thriving junior section at Corbridge CC.”
All junior players received a medal, with trophies for the best batter, bowler and player of the year at each age group.
A new trophy was inaugurated in memory of former player and chairman, the late Gus Genner, which will be awarded each year to the most promising young player in the 11 and under age group.
The first winner was Freddie McKendrick (11).
This award complements the Noel Dixon Trophy which has traditionally been awarded to the most promising young player among older juniors at the club and this year went to Bruce Clouston (16).
