17-year-old Jobe Bellingham scored twice as Sunderland picked up their first three points of the season with a comeback win against Rotherham United at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Tony Mowbray's side had suffered back-to-back defeats against Ipswich Town and Preston North End to kickstart the new Championship campaign but bounced back against one of the relegation favourites last weekend.

Despite the previous loss against Preston, the former Blackburn boss kept faith with the same starting team for Saturday's clash and saw his faith eventually repaid.

It was the visitors who took the lead on 20 minutes, as Ollie Rathbone was afforded far too much room down the right-hand side and his cross found Hakeem Odoffin unmarked in the middle, with the winger smashing his shot past Anthony Patterson.

However, the scores would be level just two minutes later, as Jack Clarke's deep cross was headed back across goal by Dan Neil, which left Bellingham with the simple task of heading home for his first senior goal.

Into the second half and the visitors wasted a glorious opportunity to retake the lead when an unmarked Jordan Hugill sent his header way over the crossbar.

He would pay for that miss on 52 minutes when Bellingham and Sunderland scored their second.

A slack pass from Rotherham's defence was picked up by Clarke and his threaded-through ball found Bradley Dack, who provided a delicate lay-off for Bellingham to fire home confidently for his brace.

The teenager could have even grabbed a memorable hattrick but saw his close-range effort well blocked, while Luis Semedo also came close to extending Sunderland's lead.

Rotherham rarely threatened an equaliser and Mowbray's side would hold on to earn their first win, with a tough trip to Coventry City to come for the Black Cats this weekend.
