Sunderland returned to the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon and played out an exciting draw with La Liga side RCD Mallorca.

Summer signing Luis Semedo would open the scoring for Tony Mowbray's side before Vedat Muriqi levelled things in the second half.

A late red card for Pablo Maffeo soured the occasion slightly after an on-pitch brawl, but there were more valuable minutes in the tank for the Black Cats ahead of this weekend's opening fixture against newly-promoted Ipswich Town.

Semedo, who is better known by his nickname Hemir, was one of two new signings to start the game against Mallorca, with fellow youngster Jobe Bellingham lining up alongside Dan Neil and Pierre Ekwah in midfield.

And it took the Portuguese forward just four minutes to mark his home debut with a goal, as he was left unmarked to nod in Patrick Roberts' cross after a quick corner routine.

Jack Clarke tested Mallorca's goalkeeper with a long-range free kick, while Roberts should have done better when fed through on goal by Bellingham, as he blazed well over the bar on his right foot.

The visitors, who finished ninth in Spain's top flight last season, were level two minutes after the restart when the dangerous Muriqi powered a header past Anthony Patterson.

The Kosovo international was threatening throughout and caused problems with his aerial prowess, with Patterson relieved to see another header flash past his far post later in the half.

Maffeo's late tackle on Luke O'Nien added an edge to the game late on as it sparked a brawl on the touchline, with the former Manchester City man earning a straight red card.

Both sides pushed for a winner but the keepers were rarely tested, with Mowbray perhaps considering adding another striker to his ranks before this weekend's season opener, especially given Ross Stewart's uncertain future at the club.

The Black Cats face a short trip to Hartlepool on Tuesday evening for their final friendly before the action truly gets back underway at the Stadium of Light at 5 pm next Sunday.
