Tyne Tour

CANOEISTS took over Hexham’s Tyne Green at the weekend as the annual Tyne Tour event once again pulled in the crowds.

Hardly a blade of grass could be seen on the riverside as it was covered by tents, around 1,000 canoeists contributing to making it the largest participation canoeing event in Europe. Paddlers from across the country headed to the Tyne Valley to join like-minded sports people on the River Tyne over three days in the Hexham Canoe Club-organised event.

Broomley and Bywell parishes near Stocksfield wanted to raise a memorial to the Fallen of the First World War.

Lord Allendale had promised to give a site for the monument and if sufficient funds were raised it was planned to build a memorial cottage for a district nurse.

Lord Allendale also agreed to let several acres of land adjoining the village school to be used as a recreation ground.
