Sign of the times

THE obliteration of Pattinson’s beautiful old shop sign by a standard Boots the Chemist board is a great loss to the town.
How can the planners have thought this was acceptable in a conservation area?
We know that Boots can do better than this. Other towns with historic buildings have sensitively designed Boots shop fronts.
Even in Hexham some years ago, Boots responded to requests by the Civic Society and opened up old window details on Back Street to make their premises more sympathetic to their setting.
So where is Pattinson’s sign? Is it just covered up? Let’s find out and ask for it to be uncovered!
Let this be a sign of the times – in which we value what we have before it’s too late and our town’s character is squandered.
