National disgrace

I TOO think the quantity of litter found on roadside verges is a national disgrace (Courant Letters, March 5).

The author Bill Bryson recently appeared recently on BBC’s Newsnight and had the excellent idea of giving motorists three points on their licence if they were found littering. Cannot the council implement this?

Last year, I spent a month in Kaliningrad, a poor, remote part of Russia and I was very impressed by the lack of litter.

This was because the government had had an anti-litter campaign and there were lots of big signs telling people to clear up and there were lots of litter baskets.

Cannot some of our council tax money be used to fund such a campaign?

Meanwhile, patriotic Northumbrians, if out walking, could do as I do, always take carrier bags and pick up some litter.

Many a mickle makes a muckle and if a lot of people did this, it would help defeat the cigarettes and lager brigade mainly responsible for the mess.
