It is public’s duty to combat litter plague

IT is almost unprecedented that I find myself sticking up for the council. But reading your correspondence about the ‘litter plague’ (Courant Letters, March 5) I felt compelled to come to the local authority’s defence.

I totally understand the person’s anger at the dumping of litter on the roadsides, as it is indeed a disgrace.

But I fail to understand how it is the fault of the authorities. Surely the dumping of litter is the sole responsibility of the dumper – no dumping, no problem.

Perhaps we, as a society, could make more effort to instil in people that littering is anti-social. We could even report it ourselves if we see people dumping litter.

But, perhaps, we should take the responsibility on ourselves to routinely take a carrier bag out with us and pick it up.

I live in the country and do just that. It is a pain and in an ideal world should not happen, but it does.

I know the council does what it can but remember there are hundreds, if not thousands, of miles of road in Northumberland and with the inevitable financial constraints facing councils may be we should do ‘our bit’ to clear up our roads.
