Hexham: Parking charges

YOUR front page article (Courant, January 4), on parking charges, and the letter in the same issue from Patricia Defty both made the mistake of describing the parking charge notices issued for the Tesco and Beales car parks as ‘fines’.

These are issued by private companies subcontracted to the shops concerned, and do not have the official status of fines as issued by the council or other authorities for on-road or other official parking.

They are more correctly called parking charge notices and do not have the legal status of a ‘fine’.

There is a lot of discussion as to the legality and proportionality of these charges, and anyone affected by them would do well to read the various sites on the internet that cover them.
