WE read with interest the article (Courant, February 26) regarding Coun. Roger Styring’s and Coun. Jennifer McGee’s comments on the possible transfer of the former Eastwood Middle School to the local community.

We would like to point out that there is already a purpose-built community centre in West Wylam less than 200 metres from that school.

As trustees of West Wylam Community Association – a registered charity – we have been working hard over the past few years to increase the use of West Wylam Community Centre – which was built for the benefit of people in West Wylam and Prudhoe and the immediate surrounding area.

This has resulted in a significant increase in bookings and inquiries about the hire of the centre’s facilities.

Recently, we held an open day with a range of different activities for local families and children, and an open meeting at the centre to which all local people were invited.

We are conscious that the centre is not in the best condition and needs major repair and refurbishment and we have been working with community development organisations to develop a long-term plan.

However, we three trustees have given 55 years of service to the association and for the last 15 we have carried out our trustee role alone.

The association needs new people to come forward to help to develop this valuable community asset.

It is clear that there is a need – from individuals and groups alike for such a facility in the area.

Why not help us make the most of the one that is already there?
