Hallstile Bank

JUST a note to, again, remind motorists of the winter dangers of Hallstile Bank, in Hexham.

A mild winter last year has relegated the ice danger to memory. This year we might not be so fortunate, particularly as it is evident that the council, now under the pretext of lack of funds, has done absolutely nothing and presumably will do nothing until some poor unsuspecting pedestrian is pinned again a wall!

As I have said before, erection of a sign would at least show that the authorities acknowledge there is a problem.

Whilst the weather is a major problem, the abysmal standard of driving doesn’t help and I remind everyone that there are alternative ‘flat’ routes out of town when the conditions are obviously bad.

Perhaps in the past Bank residents have expected too much, lobbying for weight restrictions, even complete pedestrianisation, with the winter problem being an afterthought.

Actually, vehicle size is only one aspect and much depends on how the machine is driven.

For example, Iceland is the only retailer in Fore Street to have a daily delivery with a maximum weight and length artic. I salute the professional drivers who literally creep down the Bank and who doubtless will be the first to find an alternative route when winter conditions set in.
