The award for outstanding achievement was presented to Emma Gregg (17) for turning her life around in the face of personal adversity.

Emma, who moved to Hexham from Ashington 18 months ago, has made a success of supporting herself while living in her own accommodation.

She is now studying for an NVQ in hairdressing at Newcastle College.

Manager of Hexham Youth Initiative Keda Norman said: “There are all sorts of achievements in life and one of the greatest is managing to remain cheerful, despite facing odds that seem to be stacked against you.

“This award goes to Emma for her achievement in getting on with life in the face of great personal difficulty.”

The services of youth and community worker Gillian Wood, who has worked for HYI for the past eight years, were also recognised.

Due to go on maternity leave, she was presented with a bouquet and thanked for her unstinting dedication to helping young people facing some of the most challenging situations imaginable.

A series of personal achievement awards was also presented to HYI members, including 17 Duke of Edinburgh Awards – two silver and 15 bronze.
