Tall tale teller: Collette Drifte gets in some practice.

Organised by the Hexham Rotary Club, the competition at Whitley Chapel village hall is open to anyone who can spin a good yarn with plenty of local references.

Chairman of the international committee of Hexham Rotary Club, Collette Drifte, said: “I was inspired by the World’s Biggest Liar Competition, held annually in Cumbria and I thought the folk of Tynedale could do just as well, if not better.”

The event will be held on November 14. A panel of judges will be made up of Hextol author and Hexham Courant deputy editor Brian Tilley, BBC newsreader Colin Briggs and local raconteur Ernie Coe.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Smile Train charity, which treats Third World children afflicted with cleft palates.

A raffle will also be held. For information call (01434) 683674. Application forms can be picked up from the Hexham Courant, Robinson & Cowell and Nicholson Portnell offices in Hexham.
