FOOTBALL bad boy Joey Barton swapped his football boots for gardening boots last week.

The Newcastle United midfielder (26) is serving 200 hours of community service for assaulting a former teammate Ousmane Dabo while playing for Manchester City.

He was spotted clearing lawn clippings and garden debris from the run-down West Wylam Community Centre.

A spokesman at the centre said the player had been set to continue transferring rubbish there every Monday and Wednesday, but will now do his community service elsewhere in the region.

Barton had chosen to serve his punishment through Hexham’s Probation Service rather than the Newcastle office to avoid working on a city project along with Newcastle fans.

Although he arrived in West Wylam in a Range Rover while the others struggle to fund their trip by bus, he is said to have got on well with them.
