IF YOU want any further information about Wylam Car Club come along tomorrow from 10am until 12pm outside the Spar shop in Wylam where the option C car will be on display with members from option C /Wylam Green Street to answer any questions about the scheme. You can join on the day (bring your driving licence and cheque book) if you are age 18 plus.THE parish council’s brand new all-singing all-dancing website, www.wylamparishcouncil.org, is now operational.
ON WEDNESDAY, October 8, Men at Home will hear John Cure give a talk on nuclear power.
FOLLOWING the successful Scout Railway exhibition held last autumn, the village Scout Group is holding a similar event this year on Saturday, October 11, in the Institute. They expect the event to be even bigger and better than last year, with outstanding models on display and railway linked games for all ages.
If anyone has any railway memorabilia which they can spare for sale or which would be of interest simply to put on display, do please let the Scouts know.
IN the evening, Wylam Playgroup’s first major fundraising event – a ’70s disco in the Institute. Relive the sounds of the ’70s – come and strut your stuff to ABBA, Bee Gees, T-Rex and Bay City Rollers amongst others.
CONNIE Smith has postponed her talk to Wylam Discussion Group on old Wylam, due to be given on October 15, and instead we have secured the services of Robin Piette to talk about her experiences long ago in South America.
THE Big National Ceilidh for WaterAid takes place on Saturday, October 18, from 8pm until 11pm in the Institute. The Northumbrian ceilidh band Dansons is offering its services free for this event so that Wylam and District Churches can raise more money for their Ethiopia Project. This is a very generous gesture, since a band usually charges hundreds of pounds for such an evening. Many ceilidhs will be held nationwide the same evening, culminating in a Circassian Circle at 10pm. There will be a light supper, consisting of a finger buffet at 9.15pm, a wine and beer bar, but soft drinks will also be provided. Tickets from Wylam Teashop or a committee member with a special rate for families. Come and enjoy the fun – and good exercise! No experience needed.
YOU may remember that in October last year Shelter had to cancel a talk by Alan Graham, formerly of Beamish Museum, on The Secret Life of a Jesmond Lady. Alan is coming on Monday, October 20, 7.45pm for 8pm, at the Institute. Anyone who has heard Alan before will know how entertaining he is, with a wealth of anecdotes and snippets of social history, as well as the modelled fashions.Tickets to include a glass of wine are available from the Wine Lodge, the Deli and Shelter group members.
COMMUNITY Week table-top sale Saturday, November 8, 2-4pm. Book your table in advance by contacting the Institute office.
WYLAM Playgroup would like to thank everyone who has offered pieces of equipment for the kitchen in the Falcon Centre. They are amazed at the generosity of Wylam residents. However, they are still looking for a new kitchen and so would be grateful if you would let us know if you hear of a newish kitchen being pulled out. They now have a deadline to meet, as Tynedale Council has given the playgroup three months to install a new kitchen, otherwise the building will be closed to groups using the kitchen. On a positive note, the rewiring of the building will be going ahead after half-term.
WYLAM Green Street is making use of local spare apples by turning them into local Wylam cider and apple juice. If you have any spare apples that can be used, please contact Andy or Gail on (01661) 854626 or contact at wylamgreenstreet@hotmail.co.uk.
WYLAM Film Club’s showing of Juno attracted a large audience, and the concert Great Things! in St. Oswin’s Church was also much appreciated. The brunch to celebrate David and Anne Cant’s 10 years in Wylam was a joyful community event. Visit it and be amazed – contributions and suggestions welcome.
