Wark news

THE Leek Club AGM last weekend saw about 12 members get together at the Grey Bull. They heard that following the very successful show last week, the financial position is quite healthy, allowing the subs for 2008/09 to stay the same.

After quite a few years secretary Ian White has stood down and Linda Murray has taken on that role. The chairman and treasurer will remain in the capable hands of Robert Baty and Mike Gibson respectively.

Mike would appreciate it if all members pay their subscriptions as soon as possible.

ON MONDAY, October 6, the local history group will meet. The topic will be the North Tyne Railway, and for the first time for the group, one of the members will introduce it. Ged Short will give a talk about the railway illustrated with pictures. The local history group meets in the Town Hall and starts at 7.30pm. Membership for the 2008/09 season will now be due and remain the same for the year. In addition, members pay a small fee every month to cover expenses. Everyone welcome.

NEXT Friday, October 10, Wark First School will be holding its harvest festival starting at 2pm. You’d be very welcome to join the children and the staff in their celebration in the school.

IN A couple of weeks, on Friday, October 17, the town hall will host another Fashion through the Ages show. You may remember that the hall was packed a couple of years ago when Alan Graham showed us just a few of the ‘costumes’ in his collection. The evening was made by the stories behind each of the pieces, one of the most touching being a dress worn by a woman who’d survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Tickets are available from Judith Weir on (01434) 230250. Judith will also happily put your name down for the fundraising dinner at the Battlesteads on November 6.

A LITTLE reminder of the Apple Fair tomorrow. It has now been confirmed that felt maker and crafts person Katie Jackson from Langley will be there to help you make an apple out of felt. These colourful felt apples can be a reminder of all the great fruit we can grow in our area. The fair opens at 10.30am and finishes at 4pm.

FOR the 20th year, the Garioch Bland Scottish Dance Band will be at Simonburn on Saturday, October 11, at 8pm. There is a pooled supper. Further details contact E. Mole telephone (01434) 230409. The event is in aid of Teenage Cancer, RVI.
