Horsley news

MEMBERS of Horsley Women’s Institute hold their annual meeting in the Women’s Institute Hall on Monday at 7.30pm.  New members are always welcome to join this thriving WI. A cheese and wine party will follow the business meeting.

HEARTH directors hold their monthly meeting at 8pm on Thursday, October 9.

HORSLEY made the news on September 18 when the A69 trunk road was blocked for several hours after a lorry lost its load of gravel. Traffic westbound was queuing as far back as the A1 at West Denton. Diversions by the Military Road at Heddon-on-the-Wall also became blocked when two lorries jack-knifed on sharp bends.

The traffic was then diverted through Horsley via Ovingham, however this route also proved difficult for large vehicles.

MANY thanks to Elizabeth Bramwell who held an afternoon tea to raise funds for Christian Aid.

THE gatepost on the public footpath at the north end of Lead Lane in Horsley has rotted away and is now free-standing. Walkers can pass through with care.  The matter is being reported to the parish council which will inform Northumberland County Council’s countryside department.

Other gates, stiles and footbridges around the parish are generally in a good state of repair, however, the paths are saturated with water and are particularly muddy around the gates where animals congregate.

Those paths badly affected are in the copse at Spital, in Whittle Dene and below Horsley Hill.

If anyone wishes to report a problem with a footpath contact me on hmholliday@btinternet.com

ANOTHER incident of fly tipping has been reported on the private lane near Hopside Farm in Horsley.  Large amounts of garden waste, branches and hedge cuttings, as well as an old gas cooker have been dumped in the lane, making it impassable at present.

This is the second incident of its type on this lane in recent weeks.

HORSLEY Post Office will open for the last time on Tuesday, October 7.  Residents would like to thank Rod and Brenda at the Crown and Anchor who have supported a post office facility in the village over the last few years.

It is hoped Post Office Ltd will bring a travelling postal facility to the village as a replacement service.

SEVERAL residents have asked why there are so many police cars travelling at speed through Horsley village. Apparently, Horsley is used as a police driver training area.

THE 6pm harvest festival service at Horsley village church this Sunday is being led by Helen Weatherly. All are welcome to attend.

A FULL house at the Hearth enjoyed the music of the Churchfitters Celtic folk band from Brittany. The next concert at the Hearth on October 24 features folk band The Bushbies, with music from the Borders and beyond. Early booking at the Hearth or the Queen’s Hall in Hexham is advisable.
