New arrests as Hexham murder hunt continues

POLICE searching for the remains of a missing Hexham woman, who is presumed dead, have made two further arrests in connection with a Newcastle man who went missing more than 20 years ago.

Janet Brown

As searches of land near Sparty Lea continue as detectives search for the remains of Janet Brown from Lowgate, who was last seen alive in 2005, officers have arrested a 59-year-old Tynedale man and a 44-year-old Newcastle man on suspicion of the murder of Michael Straughan.
Mr Straughan, from Newcastle, went missing in the city in 1992, but despite his disappearance being featured in BBC Crimewatch, he has never been found.
DCI Nicola Musgrove, who is leading the investigation, said: "Further information has come to light which has lead to the arrest of two men on suspicion of murder.
"As this is a live inquiry we are unable to go into more detail but at this stage there is no obvious link between Michael Straughan and Janet Brown."
Anyone with information about Janet Brown or Michael Straughan should contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
