Masked robbers tie up shop couple

MASKED raiders tied up a couple in their home before stealing goods from their shop in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The three robbers forced their way into the couple's home in Capheaton around 11pm on Tuesday.

In an ordeal lasting almost an hour, they were tied up and forced to hand over the keys of their car and their shop.

On Wednesday morning, police officers discovered the shop in nearby Kirharle had been burgled.

The raiders were wearing dark clothing and balaclavas. At least one of them had a Scottish accent.

Northumbria Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious in the area at the time or has any information is asked to contact them on 101 ext 69191 or to ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Broomley and Bywell parishes near Stocksfield wanted to raise a memorial to the Fallen of the First World War.

Lord Allendale had promised to give a site for the monument and if sufficient funds were raised it was planned to build a memorial cottage for a district nurse.

Lord Allendale also agreed to let several acres of land adjoining the village school to be used as a recreation ground.
