Glory for Matt in front of home crowd

THOUSANDS of people descended on Hexham's Tyne Green on Saturday to give one of its most famous sporting sons a spectacular send-off.

Around 3,500 gathered to wish Olympic rower Matt Wells, a former member of the town's Queen Elizabeth High School Rowing Club, good luck in his retirement event which attracted 13 Olympic rowers in total.
Included among the crowds were London 2012 gold medal winning double of Katherine Copeland and Sophie Hosking, while Hexham runner Nick McCormick, who made his Olympic debut a few weeks ago, was also in attendance.
The main draw of the regatta was the sprints between the 10 male Olympians, Matt rounding off his successful career with victory as he narrowly defeated Estonia's Kaspar Taimsoo in a nail-biting final.
