ON TUESDAY at their weekly sale Hexham Auction Mart had forward 79 cattle, which included 51 over 30 month animals. Prime cattle prices per head. Limousin heifers to £1,217.71 Barker House, £1,075.83 Ogle Castle, £1,075.70 Jubilee Buildings and £1,038.35 Watch Currock. Charolais: Steers to £1,098.88 and £1,036.93 Flotterton. Hexham and Northern Marts sold 1,162 prime sheep on Tuesday, which comprised of 921 hoggs and 241 ewes and rams. Prime hoggs had another mixed show forward, which met a similar trade to last week with only the very best quality selling at rates of 200p per kilo. Top price per kilo was for Texel x hoggs from Cornsay House at 224.4p for 43 kilo. Heavy hoggs sold at £101 from Texel x from Camphill and £101 for Suffolk x from The Whins. A consignment of heavy Suffolk x Charollais hoggs averaged £99.17 from The Whins.

ON FRIDAY at their weekly sale, Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 575 store cattle and suckled calves. The Hexham sale again continues to draw another great selection of forward steers and heifers. A total of 86 cattle were once again sold at four figures but overall the strong cattle were slightly easier on the week due to the prime cattle being at lower rates. The sale was topped at £1,195 for an outstanding Limousin x steer from Bog Hall. Top price strong heifer was £1,000 for a Limousin x from Halton Red House. Young cattle once again met a tremendous trade with a consignment of 12 Charolais steers 9/10 months from Loadman selling to a top of £1,080 and an average of £1,041.25

At the store and breeding sheep sale on Friday the in-lamb ewes consisted of a small but quality entry met a steady trade with caution evident as weather fails to improve. In-lamb ewe prices. Mule to £120 Intake Farm and £118, £117, £114, £112, £107(2) and £100 Cooks House. In the store ewes section leaner sorts harder to cash, better sorts still selling well. For the store hoggs section there was another sizeable show was forward with mixed quality as winter draws on. Many tail end hoggs still achieving good values, well fleshed forward hoggs still selling well. HEXHAM and Northern Marts on Friday, had an entry of 42 beef breeding cattle. With quality outfits forward, buyers proved cautious, mindful of fodder shortages mid way through the winter. Highlight of the sale was a consignment of British Blue x bulling heifers from George and Richard Stobbs, High Wiserley which averaged £938. Heifers with calves at foot: Limousin to £2,050 and £1,780 Palm Strothers, £1,850, £1,760 and £1,750 Mirlaw House and £1,720 Branton Middlesteads.
