WHY do the small things cause the most annoyance?

You know the sorts of things I mean. The car keys go missing as you are about to leave and then the phone rings just as the postman knocks at the door. These minor blips add to the general chaos which is my life.

I try to think calming thoughts, knowing I have to drive to Newcastle. Once in the car I tell myself to slow down or risk having my picture taken by the busiest speed camera in the county. Beware all ye who enter Haydon Bridge.

A pleasant trip across Tynedale is just what I need. Sadly, my journey is fraught with more minor irritations.

The traffic seems to be crawling along and I get stuck behind a huge lorry which is throwing filthy water all over my clean car. Serves me right for giving it a wash.

The hold-up is caused by the inevitable roadworks, with no visible signs of activity.

Road traffic cones appear, as if for no reason, and then disappear, apart from the odd stray. Whoever invented these things must be worth a fortune.

Now I know I’m going crazy. I’ll have to accept it is going to be one of those frustrating times when I rush around and achieve nothing.

As if by magic my mood improves. I’ll take it as it comes and arrive when I get there. No sense in catching road rage as well as house rage.

When life seems to overtake us

Help us catch our breath

Remind us that today is unique

And enjoy even the mundane parts
