ON TUESDAY at their weekly sale Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 96 cattle, which included 52 over thirty month animals. All classes of prime cattle considerably dearer, prime cattle averaged 164.2p/kilo with more buyers present.

There were a total of 2,483 prime sheep forward for sale on Tuesday, which comprised of 2,171 hoggs and 312 cast ewes and rams. The opening sale of 2009 for prime hoggs exceeded all expectations and rewarded consigners with the sharpest trade seen for many years. With heavy hoggs selling to £95 for Suffolk x from The Whins, the consignment of 71 hoggs from The Whins averaged £85.95 an improvement of £40 on the year. Export type hoggs were a fantastic trade selling to 197.5p twice, firstly for a pen of 33 three-quarter Texels from Eland Hall and secondly a pen of 17 three-quarter Texels from New Houses, Hallington both 40 kilos £79.
