A FARMER from Melkridge has enjoyed double success in two major shows over the last few weeks.
John Smith-Jackson’s six-month-old three-quarter Limousin cow was named best cattle in the baby beef categories at Countryside Live, Harrogate, and the East of England Christmas Festival, Peterborough.
The cow, named Mamma Mia after this year’s hit film, is home bred and will also be entered into the Royal Highland Winter Fair in Edinburgh.
Mr Smith-Jackson, of Hightown, has been farming for around 30 years and lists the double haul as his greatest achievement.
He said: “It is the best I have done personally; it is my best achievement up to date.
“She has beaten some strong competition so far. The one that came second to her in Peterborough was bought for £7,000!”
Following normal business practice, Mr Smith-Jackson will sell Mamma Mia at the spring suckler sales.
He said: “I will be very sad to see her go. My wife is not wanting her to go but it is our own business to sell them.”
Mr Smith-Jackson also entered a bullock into the two shows. It came second in Countryside Live and fourth in the East of England Christmas Festival in its category.
