Weekly mart reports

ON TUESDAY Hexham and Northern Marts had forward 71 cattle, which included 51 over 30 month animals. Prime cattle in short supply with shapely well fleshed cattle keenly bid for.

There were a total of 2,883 prime sheep forward on Tuesday whcih comprised of 2,362 lambs and 521 cast ewes and rams. A lighter show of prime lambs including a large number of hill lambs met a much stronger trade than expected and were up by £3.20 on the week. The sale was topped at £65 for Suffolk x lambs from Sillywrea. Top price per kilo of 142.5p was paid for Texel x lambs at 40 kilo from Low Staples purchased by A. Wright and Son, Boston, Lincs. ON FRIDAY, at their Special Prize Show and Sale of Limousin suckled calves, Hexham and Northern Marts had forward an entry of 1,262 store cattle and suckled calves. Well grown, well fleshed calves shown in good bloom met a fast selling trade and showed a substantial increase on the year. The show was generously sponsored by our main sponsor T. and J.T. Barton (Bottlers) Ltd, Wigan, Est. 1917 Wholesale Bottlers, Wine, and Spirit Dealers, and co-sponsors, Barclays Business Banking together with The Farmers Guardian. Prior to the sale the judge Mr William Timm, Courthouse Farm, Airmyn, Goole, awarded The George Stappard Memorial Challenge Cup for the Overall Champion to Messrs Emerson, Haggate farm, Eastgate, Weardale with an excellent Limousin x 10 month old steer which made £1,000 and was purchased by the judge. The reserve went to a three-limousin quarter heifer from Agars Hill which made £940 and was also purchased by the judge. The winners of the North Western Limousin Cattle Breeders Trophy for the Champion pen of four calves was awarded to Messrs Harle Brothers, Errington Hill Head with a superb pen of 12 month Black Limousin Heifers which made £800. There were 179 Texel rams which followed on the tremendous trade experienced at the first sale with well grown good shaped sheep selling well above sellers expectations. The sale was topped at £720 for a shearling from Bensons Fell. ALSO at Longtown on Tuesday the Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart held their special show and sale of Cheviot and Blackface lambs. The Blackface lamb show was kindly sponsored by Dunbia (Wales) Ltd. There was an outstanding entry of 1,955 Cheviots and 2,013 Blackfaces forward and trade was very good for strong, quality lambs. Judging was ably and efficiently carried out by Edward Easton, Naddle Farm, Bampton, Penrith who made the following awards.
