EGGER UK has pledged its support for a three-year campaign to save the red squirrel.
The Hexham company, which has its own squirrel monitoring point at its premises on Anick Grange Road, has joined forces with the Red Squirrel Survival Trust (RSST) as it looks at more scientific ways of monitoring and researching squirrel populations in Northumberland.
Egger has stepped in with cash to help fund the first year of the programme and is now encouraging other local businesses to follow suit.
RSST needs to raise £60,000 a year - £180,000 in total - to fund the campaign.
