Police and the fire brigade were called at around 8am when a Vauxhall Astra and Mitsubishi pick up truck collided on Ovingham Road.
The male driver of the Astra was flown to Newcastle’s RVI for treatment by the Great North Air Ambulance after suffering back pain.
The road was closed between Woodcroft Road in Wylam and Piper Road, in Ovingham, while the vehicles were recovered and oil which spilled on to the road surface was washed off.
