Councillors approve Hexham retail park plan

DESPITE numerous objections, councillors gave the go-ahead for an £8m retail park on the disused goods yard at Hexham railway station.

The proposal, which will include a Homebase DIY store and other national chains,will create around 100 jobs.
But the scheme has outraged conservation groups, who feel the design of the outlet is out of keeping with the area. They say the development will have a serious impact on the appearance of a historic part of Hexham.

Saturday, June 20th, 1885

Over 2,000 people attended the Temperance Gala held at Greencroft Park, Haltwhistle.

Led by the Bardon Mill Brass Band, 12 temperance societies paraded through the town, prior to an open air meeting in the park.

During the event the Rev. J.M. Russel condemned the House of Commons for rejecting a proposal to increase taxes on spirits and beer.
