Butchers enjoy sales lift during horsemeat scandal

WHILE the horsemeat scandal has tarnished shoppers’ trust in processed foods, Tynedale butchers are reaping the benefits.
Butchers around the area are beginning to report a rise in the number of people crossing their doorways.
Whether it be old customers returning to the fold or new ones escaping the pull of the supermarket, people have picked up the buy local baton.
Hexham butcher Cranstons has already seen a rise in customers, with manager Nick Collins reporting a 10 per cent increase in sales compared to the same week last year.

Saturday, June 20th, 1885Over 2,000 people attended the Temperance Gala held at Greencroft Park, Haltwhistle.
Led by the Bardon Mill Brass Band, 12 temperance societies paraded through the town, prior to an open air meeting in the park.
During the event the Rev. J.M. Russel condemned the House of Commons for rejecting a proposal to increase taxes on spirits and beer.
