AN 11-year-old boy is seriously ill in hospital after the car he was travelling in crashed on to railway tracks near Greenhead and was struck by a freight train.

The youngster, who it is understood may be from Haltwhistle, was airlifted to Newcastle’s RVI with life-threatening injuries by a Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer, near Alnwick, on Wednesday night.
Police say the black Range Rover he was travelling in was heading westbound on the A69 when it was involved in a collision with another vehicle around 4.25pm.
The Range Rover then veered off the A69 on to an adjacent stretch of the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line, before it was struck with what officers have described as a “glancing blow” by the train.
