Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) has pledged to support the UK's target for Net Zero by 2050 by signing the Construct Zero Five-Point Plan.

The plan was developed by the construction sector and was released on April 29, with NWG among the progressive organisations invited as co-signatories.

NWG is set to deliver a high-scale capital programme of £3.6bn between 2025 and 2030.

Their commitment to the five-point plan will likely mitigate the carbon and environmental impact, contributing positively to 2030 targets and beyond.

The Construct Zero plan was produced in collaboration with the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), the Infrastructure Client Group (ICG), and the Infrastructure and Project Authority (IPA).

It is designed to establish clear expectations for transitioning to net zero within the construction industry.

Organisations which sign the plan are asked to outline their commitments across five areas: contract for low carbon, diesel-free sites, low carbon concrete and green steel, and effective measures of carbon emissions (PAS 2080).

The strategies in the five-point plan are in step with NWG's pre-existing commitments, including those in their Environment Strategy, published in 2023.

Monisha Gower, Northumbrian Water Group’s assets director, said: "Co-signing the Construct Zero Five-Point Plan outlines our pledge to the environment while delivering our most ambitious capital delivery programme to date.

"This plan closely aligns with our existing environmental commitments and strategies within the business.

"This is something which has always been a priority to us and have worked collaboratively with our supply partners to define our forward plan.

"We have always been a visionary company, and we take our environmental responsibilities seriously.

"Our work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions dates back to 2003.

"By leading in this space, we will encourage other industries to consider and implement this change, which will reduce the cost for everyone; and continue to reduce UK emissions now and into the future."
