A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of producing a class B drug after police discovered a cannabis farm in Prudhoe.

Residents alerted the police after seeing 'suspicious' activity at the address on West Road before 10am this morning (Friday, April 19).

The man is now in police custody and the farm is currently being dismantled.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 9.50am today (Friday) we were alerted to suspicious activity at a premises on West Road in Prudhoe.

“When officers attended the scene to carry out enquiries, they uncovered a suspected cannabis farm.

“This is now in the process of being dismantled.

“A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of production of a class B drug. He remains in police custody at this time.

County Cllr Gordon Stewart who is the cabinet member for communities said: "The support from local people is vital in combatting crime and anti social behaviour of all types.

"This is another great example of the public showing that they will not put up with such activities and I am pleased that the police took such quick and positive action, which will be of a comfort for residents."
