The annual Haltwhistle Walking Festival is all set to kick off on April 27, despite challenging spring weather conditions.

Volunteers have been braving all weathers, ensuring that the routes for the festival's 26 walks are safe and ready for the 10-day event.

This year, the extreme wet weather of spring has forced the rerouting of a few walks, but the programme has finally been given the green light.

This year's three-day trek, tagged Pennine Peaks and Valleys will take place on Bank Holiday weekend of May 4 to 6.

Covering 36 miles, the walk begins and ends daily in Haltwhistle and goes from Garrigill back to Haltwhistle.

Buses will transport walkers to and from the start and end point each day, providing the opportunity to explore relatively inaccessible places in comfort.

Apart from the trek, other walks such as strolling around the Shire, gallivanting around Geltsdale, and meandering around the South Tyne are also on offer.

Slots remain on some walks and bookings can still be made at www.haltwhistlewalkingfestival.org.
