Rail passengers are set to benefit from improved accessibility following completed signalling and level crossing work on the Northumberland Line.
Signalling is now live at the northern end of the line, stretching from Bedlington to Ashington.
Around 350m of track has been replaced between Bedlington North and Bedlington South level crossings.
New level crossings have also been installed at Bedlington North, Green Lane, North Seaton and Marcheys House.
This latest track and signalling work was a crucial step in allowing passenger trains to run to the line’s start/end station in Ashington.
Construction work is also nearing completion at Ashington Station.
Council leader Glen Sanderson said: “This is about so much more than a new rail service, it’s about opening up new opportunities for the county, the region and even the country and it is fantastic to be reaching these key stages as we head towards opening.”
This rail track is expected to open in summer.
